I have always had eclectic tastes in music – in most anything, in fact –
and my own work is often fuelled by the tensions between quite different
stylistic imperatives. My music seeks to accomodate and explore a harmonic language fundamentally rooted in tonality with a liking for fractured surfaces and sudden shifts of musical temperature and direction. I'm not interested in my music being accessible: a recent, apologetic trend which more often than not leads to disappointingly thin and lightweight work – instead I want my music to be communicative: Communicative, while being emotionally and psychologically, and often musically, complex. I try in my work to engage listeners upon first hearing but to write music which reveals unexpected crosscurrents and shades of meaning upon further acquaintance. |
