PROGRAM NOTE

This short work was written in 1981 and revised and cut extensively in 1990. Archaeology plays with a little three-note figure heard at the beginning and in pretty much every measure afterwards. Chorale is a tiny, fourteen measure, interlude. Windy Day, North Lancashire is fast and excited–constant sixteenth-note activity with a ghostly descant. The first version of this work was written while I was living on the northwest coast of England; the hardness and clarity of that region’s climate inspired the piece and, I hope, is found in the music.
