PROGRAM NOTE
Big Bad Wolf began as an odd little chamber piece commissioned by Julian Wachner for Marsh Chapel in 1996. It was scored for strings, harp, piano, and three trumpets – all the instruments employed in all the other works played that evening. The title came during the composition as the three trumpets seemed to want to keep close together all the time and play similar things . . . like the three little pigs in the children's tale. In fact, the piece turns out to be full of 'threes' - three-note figures and motifs are all over the place. I orchestrated Big Bad Wolf in 2000 to make this fuller, brasher, more colorful version.
