PROGRAM NOTE
Intérieurs has three movements which may be performed in any order. After all three have been played one is repeated to close the set. The performer is asked to play the movements at a slower tempo the later they appear in the cycle. In addition two of the movements, if placed last, are repeated an octave lower than previously while the other movement if placed last is played with the pedal held down throughout. The overall trajectory of the piece is toward stiller and darker sound, no matter in which order the movements are placed. The movements are variations of each other: Intérieur 'a' has a bare, stepwise introduction in parallel 5ths followed by chords interrupted three times by unrelated arpeggiated triads in octaves. Intérieur 'b' opens with the same stepwise 5ths, drawn out somewhat, followed by the same chords and interruptions – all arpeggiated this time. Intérieur 'c' is the longest movement and again it follows this pattern but draws the material out into more discursive episodes.
