PROGRAM NOTE
For a while in the 1980s I found myself arranging and rearranging works of mine for other forces. I think this came more from a sense of formal bafflement than from a desire to reinterpret and, I am happy to say, for me this was only a phase. This wind quintet, however, contains one of these still existing sections: the very final section of the third movement is an arrangement of Tiny insects Buzz from my piano work Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. In fact, the whole of the third movement serves as four little portraits of certain insects that kept me company in a rickety cabin in Lenox, Massachusetts during the composition of this piece. The first two movements each expand and contract but have no program beyond these activities.
